Fearless Girl arrives in London with an important message…

London’s financial heart has welcomed the bronze statue called Fearless Girl, by Kristen Visbal. It arrived to coincide with International Women’s Day and is on display until June outside the London Stock exchange.

She is there to remind us of the importance of women in leadership and is a symbol of the State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) Fearless Girl Campaign, "We are delighted to bring this impactful campaign to London and continue to take a stand for the important issues of gender diversity at the board and senior leadership level," SSGA's Lori Heinel said.

I personally think she looks great, a beautiful piece of work. I hope though we can all remember long after June the vital message…Women are not represented and should be !!

Female founder funding campaign sheds light on progress but bias remains…

New research was published last week from Tech Ireland that tracked €100m in funding for women entrepreneurs here in Ireland in 2018. Whilst the funding was just shy of the target by €3m, the good news is that there was an increase in investment from 2017.

The report is an interesting one and Tech Ireland are playing an important role in tracking and publishing this data, because when you see in black and white the statistics it’s so clear there is a big problem!

Here are the statistics to prove it….

€97.7m funding raised by women is only 10.5% of the total of €930m raised in 2018.

The number of female tech founders in Ireland in 2018 was 366 which is just 17% of the 2,173 founders counted in total.

The average deal size in Ireland in 2018 was €4.3m. Female founders raised on average €2.1m while male founders raised on average €4.9m.

So the message is clear, we all have more to do!

Rewarding the risk takers - a voice in support of Irish Entrepreneurs

Award winning journalist John Kennedy wrote an article last week, discussing his admiration for Entrepreneurs in Ireland. His key point was around a supportive tax system to reward the risks they take. It was so refreshing to read and I echo his sentiments entirely.

He says “I am jealous of the courage it takes to start something and follow a conviction or a hunch. This means taking a less-travelled road, leaving job security and the comfort zone behind, hiring people and convincing them to believe in you, taking on the stress of making payroll, and winning customers and maybe investors.

I have worked in start-ups and infantile businesses often in my career and the thrill of backing yourself or an entrepreneur you believe in is risky and it’s hard work daily. Now I see this with clients, who are on that same journey.

The pitching and selling is not just to market, you are on a mission to re-educate, convince and sell everyone you come into contact with of the vision. But when you back yourselves and it pays off and people start to stand up and take notice, there is no greater thrill!

Seven Questions with Tracey Young - co-founder and CEO of PlanGrid

Another great Q&A from our friends at Sequoia with Tracey Young, CEO of PlanGrid.

Her message about simply listening strikes me as so fundamental to leadership and business success. She says ‘As I met people who were incredible listeners, I noticed how much they were able to take away from a conversation, and I really admired that.

I have felt the need and the pressure to be the manager who is always giving the ideas and has all the answers. There is a time and place where that is vital but also standing back and just listening to the team, peers, clients and industry is so vital. Showing I am approachable, willing to listen and engaged is something I strive for daily.

As business mentors, it’s our role to listen and understand a clients journey, goals and aspirations. So often when we partner with clients, their strategy and approach quickly evolve, when we press pause on execution mode and take the time to just talk. Simply listening could be the difference! Anne Wojcicki has some fantastic pearls of wisdom in this Q&A from our friends at Sequoia.

Her insights on inertia are so true! She says ‘When you've invested a lot of resources in something, it's easy to let inertia take over. But you can't let that stop you from reevaluating—and making a change if you need to.’

As business mentors, we see start up’s fall into this trap all too often. It’s not always easy to take a step back and objectively assess and continually strategise.

A new perspective, fresh eyes with relevant experience, can make all the difference. We can help you define your go to market strategy to ensure you maximise revenue growth. So Find out more and book an exploratory session today.
